International Women's Day in 2023, themed DigitALL by the United Nations focused on the ways in which technology can be used to empower women and promote gender equality. The message is clear - harnessing digital technologies for the benefit of both women and men is not only about access, but also about proper education and fair representation on this digital journey.
According to the UN Women's Gender Snapshot 2022 report, women hold only 2 in every 10 science, engineering and information and communication technology jobs globally. The numbers are even lower when we look at women in leadership positions in the tech industry. Women occupy only 11% of executive positions in Silicon Valley companies.
Despite these challenges, the number of women in tech has been steadily increasing in recent years. Women are choosing STEM degrees at higher rates than ever before, and many organizations are implementing initiatives to promote gender diversity and inclusion in their hiring and promotion practices.
